Field Walking
The initial stages of investigation...
|
The
first stage in any on-site study is to field walk the area and try
to discover any visible signs of habitation (or the remains
of). These can be a group of finds - potsherds,
flint (or lithic) implements, crushed bricks or masonry, roof tiles,
mosaics (or tesserae), metal artefacts
and so on. These would then form a 'locus' or a
central starting point to work outwards from.
We also use satellite
pictures and aerial views via Google Earth, for example, to try and
see whether there are hidden foundations or sunken fish
ponds etc.
